About

John Holley

While working at a collectively owned and run natural food store in 1978 in Salem Oregon, I started meeting members of Breitenbush Hot Springs community. Our store did a staff retreat there in May 1980 and like so many people I found it to be a magical place.I went to live there in 1985 first working on the maintenance team and then for 2 1/2 years I managed the finances. I also got to book bands and DJ’d many dances. I am very glad I got to experience the Breitenbush community when it was small and very communal.

I left Breitenbush in 1988 and I was fortunate to also work at the Opal Creek mining camp in 1989 before I moved to Portland. Circumstances conspired to have me again go to work at Breitenbush in 2010. I worked on the office team for almost 10 years, until the 2020 Covid pandemic. I have continued to visit Breitenbush regularly since then and I even started hosting online zoom meetings for former staff members to keep in touch. In 2011 I started a photo/video blog, BreitenbushBlog.com, which has images of before the 2020 fire.
